The Axarquía of Málaga and the Sierra of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara are an impressive mountain area that separates the provinces of Málaga and Granada. They were declared Natural Park in 1990 due to its natural beauty and value. Visitors can find lovely villages and towns in this area, such as: Alcaucín, Canillas de Aceituno, Canillas de Albaida, Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Nerja, Salares, Sedella in the province of Málaga; and Alhama de Granada, Arenas del Rey, Jayena y Otívar in the province of Granada.
The peak of Tejeda is 2065 metres high and the views of the sea and other mountains from the top are stunning. This area is home to pines, oaks, kermes oaks and maple trees. It is a popular place among trekkers and walkers.
The rivers and streams going down these steep mountainsides formed amazing waterfalls, it is the case of the Petrified Trees, where lime-filled water mineralised old tree trunks. Visitors can also see stunning gorges locally called Cahorros.
